Conclusions of the Working Group Safety in Road Tunnels
The working group Safety in Alpine Tunnels has completed extensive work on the issue of road tunnels. The results of the working group constitute important preliminary work for Directive 2004/54/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council on Minimum Safety Requirements for Tunnels in the Trans-European Road Network of 29 April 2004.
The experience and internal coordination of the Alpine states made it possible to adopt the Directive more quickly at the European level. The implementation and application of this Directive, which Switzerland also plans to incorporate into national law, represents an important milestone in the improvement of road safety in tunnels. A summary report on the implementation of the Directive and its application to Alpine tunnels will be systematically presented at each conference of ministers. This report will also include any instruments established for a standardised safety management of cross-border road tunnels through the Alps
